During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of digital instruments is rapidly increasing.

As the possible consequences of digitization are more sharply outlined, this opens new possibilities for spatial organization.

This urges us to reconsider the guiding principles and models for the urbanization of technology we want to follow and what our city visions are.

This could be a tool as long as there is no physical transformation of the Valley of the Fallen…

Face

Presentation & Discussion
@ INbetweenSTITUTE, Berlin
April 2024

In the Digital Age, the face has become the most important representation of our identity.

To show ourselves to the world we use selfies and Zoom-meetings, which focus on the face. And digital facial recognition and emotional detection promise to identify the other on the basis of the face, and even unveil their most secret feelings.

This focus on the face is not only the direct consequence of technical developments, but is also the result of a deeper desire stirring contemporary society.

Ecological transition implies and demands a conceptual mutation, a paradigm shift.

This global transition has to integrate systems of knowledge and ways of conceiving the world, some of which are still organizing the daily lives of the inhabitants of cities in the Global South, and are often shunned and disregarded in the Global North.

Nevertheless, crosscutting and intersecting its multiple dimensions is needed in order to find an approach to the circular city that reflects the complexity of urban ecosystems.

Space today is transformed by technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) or Mixed Reality (MR), becoming increasingly hybrid (combined physical and media).

With the Internet of Things (IoT) Hybrid Space is becoming ubiquitous and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data have the ambition and potential to algorithmically manage these Hybrid Spaces.

What challenges and opportunities do these developments bring for diplomats, businesses, and NGOs?
