Fabric is a documentary video and exhibition on the history of the buildings of the former textile factory that now houses the Athens School of Fine Arts, a main partner and venue of documenta 14 in Athens.
The documentary narrates a family story that goes back in time more than 100 years ago and spans from the Middle East – from Cappadocia, Beirut and Istanbul – to Western Europe.
Fabric is realized by Hybrid Space Lab on occasion of documenta 14 in Athens in dialogue with the Monika Szewczyk, documenta 14 curator.

Learning from Athens

The content of the documenta 14 in Athens is, according to Adam Szymczyk, influenced and shaped by the specific character of the Athens venues. With “Learning from Athens” as a title and program, documenta 14 puts emphasis on the understanding of the history of these places. There is therefore the need for instruments and tools that can support the the visitors’ understanding of the city, helping the international guests connect the art work with the spaces where this is presented.” (see article “The documenta transforms the capital” by Sakis Ioannidis in the Greek daily newspaper “Kathimerini”, 22 March 2017.

Fabric is such a tool. By unfolding the background history of the premises of the Athens School of Fine Arts as a former factory, the documentary helps visitors connect the work of the artists presented in this venue with the multiple layers of this very specific place. By supporting and enabling such an understanding of the city, documenta 14 will have a long-term impact on Athens.

The documentary Fabric is produced and directed by Hybrid Space Lab. Camera, sound, editing and post-production by Alexandros Papathanasopoulos.
