Humboldt Jungle @ German Architects Magazine

If a construction site isn’t finished on time, it won’t be a big deal in the future. Just drape some greenery over it, and suddenly you’ve turned a construction disaster into something pretty. Is it really that simple?

Green Spaces
instead of Construction!

The Humboldt Jungle aims to demonstrate how a “jungle” could temporarily save the building’s facade. “With 50 million euros still needed to construct the Humboldt Forum’s ‘Baroque facade,’ are we supposed to just stare at the concrete shell?” ask the organizers of the Humboldt Jungle campaign. Hybrid Space Lab wanted to turn Berlin’s predicament into something positive: they are letting all the gaps in the construction overgrow with greenery, for a bit more Sleeping Beauty and less construction site debacle in Berlin.

But is this a solution to reconcile supporters and opponents of the project? It’s more likely to add fuel to the opponents’ fire; after all, the new greenery from this rescue effort once again highlights that the palace’s financing has always been shaky. Over time, it would likely be too tempting to let the climbing jungle remain and abandon the plan to finish the facade altogether. But, nonetheless: The palace is standing there now, so why not let it grow wild? The only condition: Then do the same in Potsdam. The palace there may have been completed, but a little bit of Sleeping Beauty might do it some good here, too.
