Co-Curating
the City

International interdisciplinary lab researches the potential of curating as co-creating with the public as well as the transformations of the role of the expert curator.

Today one can easily access culture as well as purchase goods and services from anywhere, just with a finger-swipe. Digital technology expands the physical dimension of shops and exhibition spaces into the virtual realm. Contemporary developments, like Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, further fuse the physical and the digital into a hybrid experience.

Media networks support participative practices with active communities of ‘prosumers’ – a hybrid role combining the creator/producer and the consumer in a process of co-creation. Through such an approach, museums and (concept) stores can become active players in their communities.

Mediatization demands compensation, by spaces for physical encounter and for (new) social rituals. Museums and exhibition spaces as well as retail spaces transform into ‘experience’ spaces, their physical spaces mutating into event and celebration spaces with a strongly symbolic value.

Co-Creating

Embassy Lab Co-Curating the City bringing together Dutch, German, and international experts, takes place in Berlin on October 14th 2016. The program focuses on ‘city co-curating’ that addresses local communities as well as international audiences and tourists. It investigates the upcoming challenges of museums as urban co-curating and co-creating hubs.

The Netherlands and Dutch creative professionals with their innovative crossover approach offer inspiring examples of co-creative curatorship of such ‘experience spaces’. Berlin (and Germany in general), on the other hand, provides an interesting environment with a series of new prominent museums now being conceptualized and constructed, and a very lively biotope of concept stores.

Embassy Lab Co-Curating the City addresses these interconnected issues. It creates an interdisciplinary framework for crossover exchange between Dutch, German and international professionals from the fields of culture, (smart) retail and creative economy. With its innovative transdisciplinary approach, Embassy Lab on Co-Curating the City brings together curators, social designers and other creative professionals with experts in digital technology and marketing. With today’s hybridization of creative practices, the Embassy Lab Co-Curating the City involves professionals from a broad range of creative fields.
